Now that she finds herself back in the spotlight, considering Ana De Armas is to play her in upcoming Netflix movie Blonde, Marilyn Monroe is having another huge moment in popular culture. And most recently, she's been re-imagined digitally, with a virtual rendering gracing the cover of CR Fashion Book China, dressed in the latest collections from Balenciaga, Fendi, Prada and other major fashion houses.

De Armas isn't the only star to be breathing new life into Marilyn Monroe's legacy. Kim Kardashian's MET Gala stunt - in which she walked the red carpet wearing the vintage, Jean Louis 'naked' dress that Monroe once wore to perform 'Happy Birthday' for president JFK in 1962 - drew a lot of attention (and plenty of controversy along with it).

The Jean Louis vintage dress was worn by Monroe during her unforgettable birthday performance for President JFK in 1962. But whatever trends come and go, and regardless of who tries to emulate her, Monroe will always be iconic - a sentiment shared by CR’s Founder and Creative Director Carine Roitfeld: 'She’s a dream cover star for any fashion editor and someone I’ve always admired for being a trailblazer in creating a captivating personal brand that extended beyond her work. This is a key facet of most celebrities today, but Marilyn was one of the first to do it. I embraced the unique challenge of imagining a modern photoshoot for such a classic star. The looks I curated with Gaultier feature some of my favorite designers working today—since Marilyn has always been known as a trendsetter—while still embodying her timeless elegance and sense of empowerment.'

Following her birthday on June 1, CR China Issue 4 unveiled eight stunning covers digitally curated by Carine imagining Monroe in what she might look like had her cultural heyday occurred today. With CGI imagery, CR worked closely with web3 startup Amethyst and Authentic Brands Group (ABG), the brand development, marketing, and entertainment company that owns Monroe’s estate, envisioning the fashion and film icon within a modern lens.
