Yahoo Finance’s Allie Canal joins the Live show to discuss box office performance for Disney’s ‘Lightyear’.

BRIAN CHEUNG: Big box office weekend with Father's Day and the first Juneteenth as an official US holiday. But did "Lightyear" blast off like expected? Yahoo Finance's Alexandra Canal here with the breakdown. Big debut for Pixar on this "Lightyear" movie. How'd it do?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Unfortunately, it didn't do that well. Buzz was not able to get to infinity and beyond at the box office.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I had to put it in there. It was right--

ALEXANDRA CANAL: --there for the taking. But there was a lot of bullish sentiment around this film. Boxoffice Pro had pretty high expectations, estimating around $84 million over the three-day weekend. Industry analysts overall expected $70 million. And it only brought in $51 million, and that's despite Father's Day. We'll see what they brought in yesterday, Juneteenth, that official holiday. But I don't think it's going to be enough to upseed "Jurassic World-- Dominion," which held the number one spot throughout the weekend.

And there's a couple of reasons why I think we saw this. Number one, as you mentioned, this is a big deal for Pixar, the first major film to be in theaters exclusively since the start of the pandemic. A lot of those animated films went directly to streaming. So perhaps families got a little used to that? Maybe they're like, you know what, I don't think I need to bring my kid to the theater, especially right now with inflation. This was also a spin-off, not necessarily a sequel. So a little bit confusing there. And then, of course, that competitive environment with "Top Gun-- Maverick," which I saw on Friday. Amazing film. Highly recommend.

BRIAN CHEUNG: Everyone said that, yeah.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Yes, in addition to "Jurassic World-- Dominion." And those films just continue to outperform.

BRIAN CHEUNG: Yeah, I mean, well, I mean, it's still been a strong summer, though, as far as movies go. I mean, when we talk about just, I guess, the next big industry test here, what do you think is going to be the next movie on the docket that could, you know, maybe upstage? It sounds like "Top Gun" is really the top dog right now.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Yeah, and I feel like that film is going to consistently do well throughout the summer. But another one that I have my eye on is "Minions-- The Rise of Gru."

BRIAN CHEUNG: I'm still-- how many of those movies have they made at this point?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: There are so many. But again, I think it's a good test to see what the pulse is like for those family-friendly movies, if kids want to return. I mean, look at the Minions. They're adorable. So I have my eye on that one. But I also think it's going to be interesting to watch more of those middle tier movies, right? "Elvis" with Tom Hanks, Austin Butler. "Nope," that's a movie that's coming out in July. So how are those--

BRIAN CHEUNG: Jordan Peele's movie, yep.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Yes, Jordan Peele's movie. And how are those films going to do? Because we've seen the big budget blockbuster films, your "Top Guns." "Thor" is coming out later. I expect that to do really well. But where does that leave those middle tier films? Should they go direct to streaming? Should they still be at the box office? So I think 2022 is this year of experimentation, and we'll see. We'll see what happens with those.

BRIAN CHEUNG: All right. Our producer Val Caval very excited for that "Elvis" movie. So--

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I am too.

BRIAN CHEUNG: --when that comes out--

ALEXANDRA CANAL: It looks really good.

BRIAN CHEUNG: --we'll have to go check it out.

BRIAN CHEUNG: Thanks so much, Alexandra Canal. Appreciate it.

Just as they did 200 million years ago (not to mention back in 1993 when Jurassic Park first premiered), dinosaurs ruled the Earth at the weekend box office. For the second straight week, Jurassic World Dominion stomped straight to the top of moviegoers’ must-watch list, snacking on a first-place $58 million domestic haul over the holiday weekend to nibble at a total domestic take of close to $250 million. In the second week following Dominion’s June 10 debut, the final film in the Jurassic Worl

Revenge...uh...finds a way. Writer-director Colin Trevorrow took to Twitter over the weekend to address a fan concern about the Tyrannosaurus (essentially the franchise mascot at this point) being made to "look weak" against Giganotosaurus in the climactic dinosaur battle of Jurassic World Dominion (now playing in theaters). Trevorrow stood firmly by the T. rex, citing the film's prologue sequence in which the Rex gets taken out by the largest land predator the world has ever known. "Worth notin

As we reported yesterday, the debut Pixar’s Lightyear has indeed failed to dethrone Jurassic World: Dominion, despite nearly a 60 percent drop for the dinosaur movie in its second week. That 60 percent drop sounds more dramatic than it is, though, with Dominion having opened pretty big last week. It has already made nearly $250 million, with 58 of those millions coming from this past weekend. As for Lightyear, it went to $51 million (but not beyond), making this a somewhat disappointing return t

Shares of AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC) were essentially flat in morning trading Tuesday after a long holiday weekend that saw the Toy Story spinoff Lightyear largely bomb at the box office. The Disney (NYSE: DIS) film had been expected to bring in some $70 million to $85 million this weekend, with as much as $135 million worldwide, but instead was able to generate only $51 million stateside and $35 million more globally. After the meteoric takeoff of Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion, AMC hoped a family friendly movie like Lightyear could bring in the kids over the holiday weekend and help keep the movie theater chain's momentum going.
